Testimonial from Mary Cappel

I had the amazing opportunity to host Mike Spiller from Games of the World as a one week Artist in Residency program at Jefferson Elementary in Winona, Minnesota.  The week included instruction of all students during their physical education classes, a fun and energetic evening event for families, and staff training as well.  He continued with one-day programs at three other elementary schools in Winona before traveling to Minneapolis to present at the Minnesota Association of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (MNAHPERD) state conference.

Mike’s presentations involve highly active, low organization/equipment activities that are found in many countries and cultures around the world. He works on fitness, team-building, cooperation, character education and appreciation for individual differences from a global perspective.  Teamwork, active participation, appreciation of other cultures and languages, and the importance of play around the world were the main focus.

Mike was incredibly well received by students, teachers, administration and parents alike.  The kids were so excited each day, and couldn’t wait to see what they would be working on for the day.   They continue to bring up activities they learned with Mike.  The 2nd grade teachers incorporated some of his games into their Native American Unit game day.  PTA members, who funded the residency, still talk about how awesome the program was.  The elementary PE staff have included MANY activities they learned from Mike into their curriculum.

Games of the World-- and Mike Spiller-- was an incredibly educational, active and FUN Artist in Residency program.  I would highly recommend this program to any other school districts, so they could have the same great experiences our students, parents and staff had.  Please feel free to contact me at mary.cappel@winona.k12.mn.us
